In the Beginning: God’s Plan, Power, and Purpose

Opening Scripture:

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.”
— Genesis 1:1–3 (ESV)

Introduction

Everything begins with God.
Not just the universe. Not just creation. But you. Your story, your breath, your purpose—it all starts with the One who was there in the beginning.

We live in a world obsessed with origins—where we came from, what caused what. But long before any science, time, or story began, the Bible tells us clearly:

“In the beginning, God…”

This is more than a history lesson—it’s a foundation for hope, faith, and identity. If you want to understand your life, your struggles, your calling, you have to go back to the beginning.

In the Beginning—God Was Already There

“In the beginning, God…” — Genesis 1:1

God was not created—He is eternal. Before anything was, He is.

This gives us assurance:

  • He’s not surprised by your circumstances.
  • He’s not limited by time or chaos.
  • He existed before the storm—and He will remain after it passes.

He is the Alpha and the Omega, the Author and Finisher of our faith (Revelation 22:13, Hebrews 12:2).
So no matter what’s happening in your life—you are not alone, and your story is not out of control. God was there in the beginning, and He’s still in control now.

God Speaks Into Darkness and Chaos

“The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep…” — Genesis 1:2

Before God began shaping the world, there was darkness, confusion, and emptiness.

Maybe that’s how your life feels right now—formless, empty, dark.
But here’s the hope: God doesn’t avoid the chaos—He steps into it.

“And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” — Genesis 1:3

God’s Word brings order, life, and clarity.
What He did for the universe, He can do for you.

He’s still speaking:

  • Into broken homes
  • Into depressed minds
  • Into addicted hearts
  • Into hopeless situations

Wherever God speaks, light breaks through.

Your Life Has Purpose Because You Were Created by Design

“So God created man in his own image…” — Genesis 1:27

You are not an accident. You are not random.
You are not a mistake of biology or chance. You were created by God, on purpose, for a purpose.

He didn’t just form you—He formed you in His image, giving you value, dignity, and calling.

And from the very beginning, His desire has been to walk with you, bless you, and use you to reflect His glory in the world.

No matter how far you feel from that purpose, it still stands.

“The gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.” — Romans 11:29

God Still Brings New Beginnings

The same God who created the world in Genesis 1 is the God who creates new hearts today.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:17

You may feel like your past has disqualified you—but Jesus came to give you a new beginning.

On the cross, Jesus took our chaos—our sin, our shame, our judgment—and buried it in the grave.
When He rose again, He said to all who believe:
“You don’t have to stay in darkness. You don’t have to stay empty. Let Me start again in you.”

Let There Be Light—In You

“For God… has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”
— 2 Corinthians 4:6

That same voice that said, “Let there be light” now calls to your heart.

Will you let Him shine in your darkness?
Will you let Him bring purpose to your pain, order to your confusion, and hope to your future?

God is not finished with you. He is not limited by your beginning, your background, or your brokenness.
When He begins something—He finishes it in glory.

“He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion…” — Philippians 1:6

Closing Scripture:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
— John 1:1

This is speaking of Jesus, who was there in the beginning and is here now.
He is the Light of the world. And today, He invites you to begin again—with Him.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being the God of beginnings. You were there before the world began, and You are still speaking life, hope, and truth today.

Lord, for anyone here who feels lost, empty, or overwhelmed—speak light into their darkness. Speak peace into their storm.
Remind us that our story didn’t start with pain or sin—it started with You.

And because You are the Author, we trust You with every chapter.
Start something new in us today. Bring healing, purpose, and faith where we need it most.

In the name of Jesus, the Light of the world, we pray,
Amen.
