God and Country: Living as Citizens of Heaven on Earth

Welcome:

“But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.”
— Philippians 3:20 (ESV)

Good morning,

We live in a nation we love. We hang flags, sing anthems, and celebrate the blessings of liberty. But as followers of Jesus, we also live with a holy tension:
We are citizens of an earthly country, but we belong to a heavenly kingdom.

So how do we live faithfully—loving our country, honoring its laws, contributing to its good—while remembering that our ultimate allegiance is to the Lord of all nations?

Today we will look to the Word of God to find clarity, courage, and conviction on the topic of God and Country.

Honor Earthly Authority, But Worship God Alone

“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God…”
— Romans 13:1 (ESV)

Scripture calls us to honor our leaders, pay taxes, obey laws, and pray for those in power—not because they are always right, but because God is always sovereign.

“Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
— Mark 12:17 (ESV)

Jesus Himself taught us that we can respect human government without compromising our worship.
We salute the flag, but we bow to the cross.

Be Salt and Light in the Nation God Placed You

“Seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf…”
— Jeremiah 29:7 (ESV)

Though we are citizens of heaven, God has placed us here, now, for a reason.

He calls us to:

  • Vote with integrity
  • Serve with humility
  • Speak truth in love
  • Stand for justice
  • Shine the light of Christ in a dark world

We don’t retreat from culture—we redeem it. We live as missionaries right where we are.

Do Not Confuse Patriotism with Faith

“You shall have no other gods before me.”
— Exodus 20:3 (ESV)

There is nothing wrong with patriotism. In fact, gratitude for your country is a biblical virtue.

But when love of country surpasses love for God, or when the flag becomes more important than the cross, we’ve stepped into idolatry.

Our first allegiance is to the Kingdom of God, not to a party, policy, or platform.

We are not Democrats or Republicans first—we are disciples of Jesus.

True Freedom Comes Only Through Christ

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
— John 8:36 (ESV)

We are grateful for the freedoms protected by governments—freedom to worship, speak, gather. But let us never forget:
The greatest freedom is not political—it’s spiritual.

No law can change a heart. No constitution can save a soul.
Only Jesus can break the chains of sin and bring eternal liberty.

Pray for Your Nation with Humble Hearts

“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face… then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
— 2 Chronicles 7:14 (ESV)

This promise was given to Israel, but its principle still stands:
When God’s people pray—really pray—with humility and repentance, revival can come.

America doesn’t need more noise. It needs more knees on the ground.
Pray for leaders.
Pray for repentance.
Pray for the Gospel to flood every city and every heart.

Call To Action: Your Truest Identity Is in Christ

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)

You may be proud of where you’re from. But today, God is calling you to be part of something even greater—His eternal kingdom.

No matter your nation, background, or politics, the invitation is the same:
Come to Jesus. Be forgiven. Be made new. Join the people of God.

This world is temporary, but His kingdom is forever.
Don’t just wave a flag—raise the banner of Christ.

Closing Scripture:

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom He has chosen as His heritage!”
— Psalm 33:12 (ESV)

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the country You’ve placed us in. We thank You for freedoms, for safety, and for the opportunities we often take for granted.

But more than anything, Lord, we thank You that our true citizenship is in heaven.
Help us to be faithful citizens on earth—living with integrity, showing love, defending truth, and sharing the Gospel.

Guard our hearts from idolatry. Keep our priorities aligned with Your kingdom.
Raise up Your Church in every land—not to win elections, but to win souls.

And Lord, for anyone listening today who has never given their heart to You, let them see that the only kingdom worth living and dying for is Yours.
Make them new. Set them free. And write their name in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

We pledge our allegiance to You, Jesus—our King, our Savior, our Hope.

In Your mighty name we pray,
Amen.
